Neonatal Care Leave: Understanding Your New Responsibilities as an Employer

The landscape of parental leave in the UK is about to undergo a significant shift. Starting April 6th, 2025, employers will need to navigate new legislation granting parents of babies requiring neonatal care additional leave and pay.

This change recognises the intense challenges faced by families when a newborn requires critical medical attention.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • In addition to maternity, paternity, or other leave, each eligible parent can take up to 12 weeks of extra leave. This must be used within 68 weeks from the child’s birth.
  • Neonatal leave will be available to employees from their first day in a new job and will apply to both parents of babies who are admitted into hospital up to the age of 28 days, and who have a continuous stay in hospital of 7 full days or more.
  • In addition to the leave entitlement, eligible employees can receive Statutory Neonatal Care Pay. Employees will need at least 26 weeks continuous service and meet the minimum earnings threshold to qualify.
