Is it HO HO HO or NO NO NO for the Christmas party?

Hey there, party people! We know you’re gearing up for some serious festive fun, and why not? It’s the season to be jolly! But before you unleash your inner dancing queen or king, let’s have a quick chat about keeping things merry and bright while staying on the right side of HR.

Secret Santa: To Gift or Not to Gift?

  • No Pressure: Let’s face it, not everyone loves Secret Santa. Make it clear that participation is totally optional. No guilt trips allowed!
  • Keep it Classy: Remind your team to keep gifts appropriate for the workplace. No reindeer boxers or singing fish, please!
  • Budget-Friendly Fun: Times are tough, so set a sensible spending limit to avoid any financial stress.

Thinking of Ditching Secret Santa Altogether?

Why not suggest a charitable donation drive instead? It’s a fantastic way to spread some holiday cheer and give back to the community – maybe even one last shot to get on Santa’s good list?

Remember that what happens at a party, does not always stay at the office party.

We know, we know, nobody wants to think about HR during the party season. But trust us, a little planning goes a long way!

  • Social Media Savvy: Remind everyone to be mindful of what they post online. A festive snap is great, but let’s avoid anything that could damage your company’s reputation.
  • Don’t Forget Your Policies: Dust off those social media policies and make sure everyone’s aware of them. (Need help with this? Give us a shout!)
  • Out of Office, Still In the Picture: Remember, even those impromptu after-party gatherings can have HR implications. Encourage responsible behaviour and remind managers to avoid discussing sensitive topics like salaries.

Don’t get your tinsel in a tangle!

Did you know that as an employer you can be held liable for out of work events?

Depending on the context, those drunken promises at parties can be held to be binding and managers should be reminded not to talk about salary or any other contractual terms at the party.

Worried? The best defence you can have as an employer is to have good contractual documents and clear procedures in place. Need help? Give us a call.

Is it a work event? In short the answer is yes.

We don’t want to be the Scrooge here, but people’s behaviour changes at social events and this can cause problems for you, the Employer.

  • Friendly Reminder: While everyone’s letting loose and enjoying the festivities, it’s worth gently reminding your team to keep things professional. (Yes, even when the karaoke machine comes out!)
  • Managers, Take Note: The holiday party can be a tricky time for managers. It’s easy to slip into “party mode” and overstep boundaries. Remind your managers about company policies around bullying, discrimination, and equal opportunities to avoid any awkward or even legally problematic situations.
  • Everyone’s Responsible: Let all employees know that inappropriate behaviour, even at a social event, can result in disciplinary action.
  • Stay Alert: If things get a little out of hand with a team member, it’s best to address it quickly. A quiet word and a safe ride home might be all it takes to avoid a bigger issue later.

Need a Policy Check-Up?

Festive Feasts and Drinks for All!

Planning the menu for your holiday bash? Here’s a quick checklist to make sure everyone feels included and enjoys the festivities:

  • Toast the year! If you’re having an open bar, don’t forget about your non-drinking colleagues. Make sure there are plenty of delicious non-alcoholic options available. It’s a great way to promote responsible drinking and ensure everyone feels included.
  • Under 18? No Drinks Allowed! This is a legal must-do! Make sure no underage employees are served alcohol.
  • Food for Every Taste: Cater to all dietary needs and preferences. Whether it’s vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or any other dietary restriction, make sure there are tasty options for everyone.
  • Allergy Awareness: Let your venue or caterers know about any employee allergies. This helps minimise the risk of any allergic reactions and ensures everyone can enjoy the food worry-free.

By taking these simple steps, you can create a festive and inclusive dining experience that everyone can enjoy!

Getting Home Safely After the Holiday Cheer!

Let’s make sure everyone gets home safe and sound after the festivities.

We’re sure we don’t have to spell it out for you, but just to reiterate – Don’t Drink and Drive.

Encourage responsible drinking and plan transportation in advance – book some taxis for the night and don’t worry about it later.

If you see a colleague who’s had too much to drink, step in and help them find a safe ride home.
